project : hallucinations

The idea behind this piece is to give the audience the impression that they have just had a hallucination when, in reality, the artist has produced that illusion for them.

The goal of the work is to investigate hallucinations that arise from mental illness as well as those that are self-induced, exploring the mind and perception.

The piece aims to provoke thought in the audience and urges them to think about the uneasiness and bewilderment we have when we see something that is fleeting in our minds but that we are unable to physically grasp.

To emphasize the difficulty of seeing and reality, the work is created using a produced film picture that is put into a stop-motion movie with long intervals between movements.

darkroom scans

For my final college project I chose the theme 'Hallucinations' and studied a lot about mental disorders to try and understand it as best as possible. Experimenting a lot with film photography and development taught me how to manipulate images in the dark room to get different unnatural effects. I wanted to depict some symptoms of schizophrenia like hallucinations and paranoia through my photography.
